Are you talking about App updates? There are two ways to check updates, my first choice is one finger triple tap on the App store icon, then flick to updates and double tap. Then toward the bottom of the screen you will first find previous updates or something like that, then do a three finger swipe down to refresh the screen. Then you will have Available updates. Once in a while, the App store icon will show a number of updates, but there are almost always more updates that you won't see until you refresh the screen.
