I think Simon is right. I just tried it, and is sends it as a text message. Which is fine if that is what you want to do. But, does the other person have an iDevice? If not, you need to make sure that send as SMS is on in message settings. If you really want it to go as an email, while in the text message, flick up or down with one finger to copy, double tap, then go to mail and start a new email, and in the body of the email turn the rotor to edit and paste the message.
