It’s the synthesizer that’s actually doing the speaking, not the
screen-reader. The synths are now more human-sounding, and probably more
autonomous (independent of the screen-reader) than they used to be. This has
its downside, as you’re finding out.

creator of the screenreader would make that decision for you, but funny,
too. I've used screen readers for over twenty years, and never found one yet
