I misspoke, in the past, a two finger flick up would only read the body of the email. Now it just makes that sound indicating you cannot do that. The back button is always in the top left corner. Also, the Scrub gesture will activate the back button. Put two fingers on the screen, and scrub back and forth 2 or three times quickly and lift your fingers.
