That depends entirely on your schedule and who else lives in your house and
their schedule. At my retail store we also use connected thermostats and since
there are of course regular hours it is easy to set a schedule for the heat to
come on about half an hour before opening time and get things to a certain
level and to also get it to turn the heat down to 15 Celsius about 15 minutes
before closing However, at our house this wouldn't work because my wife usually
comes to the store 3 or 4 times a week and sometimes she goes with me in the
morning and sometimes she comes later, sometimes I may go at 7 AM and other
times at Noon. It is much easier for us to use our smart thermostat with our
smart speakers at home or, when we are both at the store, on our iPhones to
turn the heat up a bit before we go home or to turn it down if we forget to
tell Alexa or the Google Home to do so when we leave.

The thing about programmable thermostats is that it is usually a set and forget
thing. I hardly ever have occasion to diddle with the thermostat once the
programming is done.

I have a different model of a Honeywell thermostat and while the control
panel is a touch screen, my sighted wife can control it and if needed,
program it on the touch screen.
The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver.
And, I just had my wife check, it would be very easy to put a tactile dot,
we call them lock dots, that are tiny and clear, on the up, down, and done
buttons so a blind person could adjust the temperature without the internet
access.
The guy who installed ours was doing that while my wife was out, but he told
me the info I needed to set up the app, the mac address number is the key
since you have to have that since it is the unique identifier for your
specific thermostat.

It is, as Sieghard said, hardwired, and personally, I think it is worth
paying to have that done as it protects the warrantee.

Hi Robin,

Yes, the Honeywell thermostat can be used just like any thermostat, but I
don't think it could be done by a blind person since it is a touch screen.
Maybe with the help of a sighted assistant from Aira or Be My Eyes it could
be done, never tried it nor did I ever try to have a sighted person make
some sort of tactile overlay or put dots on the touch screen to see if that
works. I still have a plain old $20 mechanical thermostat in my house as
well (the one with the lever underneath which you push from left to right)
so if the smart thermostat for some reason does not work I can simply use
it. I must say, however, that I probably had to do this once or twice in the
years I had my smart thermostat, but it of course all depends on how
reliable your internet is. There have been definitely more times when a
power outage which lasted more than 3 or 4 hours was an issue although for
us it's also not such a big issue even in the winter since we have a wood
stove which can easily heat the entire upstairs of our house if we leave all
the doors open.
And yes, just as any smart thermostat I have ever seen this Honeywell Lyric
T5 has to be hardwired.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,
Can you tell us more about the Honeywell thermostat? I.E. what is the unit
itself like does it have any controls on it in the event that internet
connectivity is down can someone who is still blind operate it manually in
any kind of fashion? Can sighted people operate it manually for instance
just raising or lowering temperature settings that sort of thing I didn't
mean programming of course.
Is it hard wired or is it like the talking thermostat that started this
thread which was powered by 4 AA batteries?

Thanks as always for insights shared from experience.

There are many good connected thermostats available these days, I am sure
Nest thermostats are good, but they do seem to be pricy and I have a
Honeywell Lyric T5 (I think there is probably a newer model now) which also
works very well and has an accessible app and it only costs less than half
of what a Nest costs.

Hi, All. I'd like to hear from anyone who is using a Nest thermostat with a
google app or smart speaker. I think that is what my neighbor suggested.
