Mine was set to auto play when it was launched and mute was turned off, but
I couldn't hear anything until I pressed the up volume once on my phone. Now
it works a lot better.

When I first got Direct tv on my phone, I couldn't hear anything. One day I
hit a volume switch and it played perfectly.
Under settings, then preferences. Their is a switch for mute on launch.
