Hello List,

I'm posting this to viphone and iDevices.

After following the above two lists, reading Jonathan Mosen's book iOS 11
without the eye, and listening to Douglas Walker's Hadley iFocus videos on
iOS 11, I finally upgraded to iOS 11.02 this past Tuesday night on my iPhone
7. My desktop computer is running Windows 7 and my screen reader is ZoomText
10.1 Magnifier/Reader.

I'm giving a list below of actions taken and my experience so far with iOS
11 for those who might be interested. Items 1 through 8 are actions I took
before the upgrade, item 9 is the upgrade step, and items 10 through 16 are
my post-upgrade comments.

   1. My primary delay in upgrading had to do with my hesitancy to
move to itunes 12.7 which is needed with iOS 11. I've always backed up my
apps to my Windows 7 computer using iTunes and the removal of apps and app
management from iTunes 12.7 was the main thing causing my upgrade delay.

   2. I first went to Settings, General, About, Applications to
update any 32-bit applications I thought I might use going forward that had
updates. I also deleted several applications both 32-bit and 64-bit that I
no longer used.

   3. I used iTunes 12.6.x to download all my updated apps to my
local computer. These will not be available to roll back to going forward
with iTunes 12.7 but old habits die hard.

   4. I did an encrypted backup in iTunes 12.6.x. I did an iCloud
backup by going to Settings, my name at the top of the screen to get to
Apple ID, etc., my iPhone 7, iCloud Backup, Backup now.

   5. I decided to upgrade my iCloud storage plan from the $.99/month
50GB plan to the $2.99/month 200GB plan since it seems obvious to me that
Apple is moving away from user local management on a home computer to their
iCloud service. Plus, the accountant in me was okay with paying three times
the cost of my current plan for four times an increase in storage. To
upgrade my iCloud storage, I went to Settings, Apple ID, iCloud, Manage
storage, Change storage plan, and selected the 200GB plan.

   6. I reviewed the article iOS 11 killed my battery life. Here's
how I finally revived it and you can, too by Jennifer Jolly, Special for USA
TODAY which had been posted to the viphone list and took some of the
recommended steps before upgrading. Specifically, I went to Settings,
Privacy, Location Services and reviewed every app on my iPhone to set them
to While using. I noticed several apps were set to always. I also noticed
some apps did not have a while using setting that I could find so when faced
with the choice of always or never, I set these to never. I next went to
check my email fetch settings at Settings, Accounts & passwords, Fetch new
data, and set this to manually. I'm not a fan of devices or apps doing stuff
automatically so I prefer manual settings in most cases.

   7. I used the excellent free Macrium Reflect program to do a
complete image backup of my Windows drive before installing the iTunes 12.7
update. I like to do a complete image backup before installing any new
programs on my computer in the event they trash something. Macrium Reflect
allows you to do a complete restore of an image backed up to an external USB
drive as I do which will return your computer to just as it was before the
new program was installed.

   8. I ran the Apple Software Update program on my Windows 7
computer and installed the iTunes 12.7 update. I had no issues with this
process other than when I launched iTunes 12.7 the first time, it hung when
I was supposed to agree to the new terms. It worked fine when I restarted it
and I don't have any issues with the new version other than I miss not being
able to back up my apps to my local computer. I will say that file
management for moving files between the computer and my iPhone is much
easier in 12.7.

   9. At about 9:45pm Central time, I went to Settings, General,
Software update, and executed the button to update to iOS 11.0.2. I made
sure my iPhone 7 was plugged into the lightning cable connected to my
computer even though the battery was over 90% charged just in case. I also
opted to upgrade directly on the iPhone as opposed to doing it with iTunes
because my past iOS upgrades with iTunes seemed to take much longer. My
iPhone memory capacity was plentiful so this was not an issue. I did not
exactly time the upgrade but my check of the clock after it was complete
reflected about 15 minutes from start to finish. During this time, my iPhone
vibrated and restarted as the new iOS was loaded and the black screen
presented a progress line which is very thin indicating the install process.
Unfortunately, Voiceover does not announce anything during this time. I had
to input my 4-digit passcode and my Apple ID during this 15 minutes but I
believe that was the extent of my input. After completion, Voiceover and the
iPhone worked pretty much as it had under iOS 10.3.3 but see below.

10. One thing I immediately noticed which affects those with some
vision is that my screen brightness seemed much dimmer under iOS 11. I
always had it set at 26% in iOS 10.3.3 but it had moved to something like
10% after the upgrade. I launched the control center by placing focus on the
status bar and doing a 3-finger swipe up. I set it to 28% but it still seems
dimmer than under iOS 10.3.3. I don't know if this is due to some screen
presentation difference in iOS 11 or something else. I haven't changed any
of my screen settings and have yet to review all of them to see if the
upgrade changed any of them. It does seem that when waking up from a locked
state, my iPhone 7 takes more time under iOS 11 to return the screen to its
brightness setting.

11. Since I had seen many posts on problems with editing mode for
moving or grouping apps, I wanted to test this. I also had zoom turned on at
Settings, General, Accessibility, Zoom and since a post on viphone indicated
this might be a problem when running Voiceover, I wanted to check this first
thing. Sure enough, with zoom turned on, a single finger double tap and hold
on a home screen does nothing. When zoom is turned off, a single finger
double tap and hold on a home screen returns the started editing Voiceover
response as expected. I reported this apparent bug to Apple Accessibility as
I'm sure others had already done before me.

12. I tend to use zoom more than moving or editing apps so I thought
I'd turn it back on. However, I found that zoom which is launched with a
3-finger double tap seemed overly prone to activate particularly when in the
App Switcher so I turned it off. I don't want to add it to my home button
setting since I constantly need to turn Voiceover off and on with the Fleksy
keyboard and only want Voiceover affected by a triple press of the home
button. I'll add that the App Switcher seems a bit flaky to me because it
has gone black several times when removing apps with a 3-finger swipe up and
it has also prompted me for my passcode on several occasions when removing
apps. It seems particularly prone to this flaky behavior when removing the
app running in the far right position which is the last one launched.

13. By Wednesday evening, I noticed that my battery seemed to be
draining noticeably faster than under iOS 10.3.3. I also noticed I was
hearing the sound my iPhone makes when receiving mail even though the mail
app was closed. So I went to Settings, Accounts & passwords, Fetch new data
and sure enough, the upgrade had reset this from manual to automatic. I set
it back to manual and my battery life seems to have improved.

14. I use the Samantha enhanced as my Voiceover voice and don't
intend to change this. I was surprised with everything I've heard about the
new Siri voice in iOS 11 that Siri seemed to sound the same the few times I
called her post upgrade. I will say that it was toward the end of Wednesday
following my upgrade Tuesday night before I started hearing the new Siri
voice. This happened automatically without any action on my part.

15. I do like to have a wide range of voices available for TTS
reading so I went to Settings, General, Accessibility, Speech, Voices,
English, and downloaded the US Siri male voice, the UK Siri male and female
voices, The UK Serena enhanced voice, and the Australian Siri male and
female voices. These downloads occurred uneventfully.

16. Finally, I'll say I'm not noticing any other differences not
already mentioned between iOS 10.3.3 and iOS 11.0.2. I will add that I don't
use braille so the reported iOS 11 bug regarding braille speedy input does
not affect me. I also never delete email messages with the mail app so the
inconsistency issue with the rotor and deleting messages doesn't affect me
either.

All the best to those who have yet to upgrade and I hope that something
reported above might be helpful.
