Keith,

I've gotten my last two phones, an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 7, both running
Verizon service from differing places and found no difference in them. Verizon
phones have been unlocked starting with the 6 I believe. If you are not buying
down the price by getting contract service, I see no reason to get it from your
carrier. The iPhone 7 I got last November from Apple through the mail was
unlocked and qualified for their interest free financing. I pay their bank
partner about $35 a month for the phone which I believe was about the same
price I was paying for my iPhone 6 to the financial partner Verizon was using.
The only issue could be that Apple might require that you get their latest
model like an 8 or X to qualify for the interest free financing. You simply
need to ask as I've found their phone support very helpful. If you're doing it
over the phone with Apple, just be prepared for a possible delay.

Good luck and I know your wife will enjoy the new iPhone.

Alan Lemly

Subject: Do phones differ diepedning upon where you buy them?

Hi,

My wife is going to get her first iPhone. We’re on Verizon. Does it matter
whether she gets the phone from Verizon directly or getting an unlocked iPhone
from the Apple Store? I’m under the impression carriers no longer lock their
phones, but I’m not sure about that.

Thanks in advance, Keith
