Hello Don,

Your phone keeps track of your steps automatically when you are carrying it. 
Open the Health app and choose the second tab, Today. The step count is 
displayed. The iPhone 6 and up, except the SE, also keeps track of how many 
flights of stairs you climb and displays this information on the Today screen 
in the Health app.
