No, the Google Assistant is also not available here in Canada at this point just as the google Home Speaker is not yet available although apparently this is supposed to change later this year. Also, ind typical Google fashion the google Assistant app apparently wants to keep track of your location at all times even when you are not using the app so it can collect as much information about you as possible. It is interesting how there is a lot of discussion how Apple is totally missing the boat on the smart speaker category, but one thing that isn’t mentioned is that devices like the Amazon Echo or Google Home are only available in the US and a couple of other countries, I believe the Echo is available in the UK and Germany, but it is not even available in Canada and we only just now are able to use Amazon Video here. If the rumours are true Apple may release a smart speaker tomorrow or if not then maybe in September or October and it will be interesting to see if Apple is making it available in many more countries. I know not all Apple services have always been available everywhere, but I could see how such a device might be available wherever apple also sells iPhones or at least where SIRI is available since of course SIRI would be absolutely required for this to work. If so and if Apple is finally giving SIRI the necessary upgrade to bring it more in line with what Alexa and Google Home can do then Apple could very quickly gain a strong foothold in this market simply because the other companies didn’t bother to make their device available outside the US and a handful of other countries.
