Don, I also have these annoying problems on my 5S. I haven’t dug into what makes these annoying things happen, I just learned how to live with it. A Big Time PITA indeed!
Although, every now and then I do a hard reset, I think it’s called. In which you hold down both the top unlock button along with the home button for say, five seconds. It usually boots up on its own. It does seem to help, but I don’t know. Maybe try that? But remember, I ain’t no IPhone guru, just an ordinary average blind guy. LOL!
