I don't think you can use Whats App on an iPod Touch because it is tied to your
mobile phone number.

There are also any number of apps which specifically assign you a phone number
which you can use to send and receive texts from an iPod Touch.
Two apps I heard/read about and which get good reviews are TextPlus and
TextFree Unlimited, but I have not tried them and don't know if they are fully
accessible. However, you don't have much to loose if you try them, they are
free apps and if you find you like one of them and it is accessible then I
believe either one offers to get rid of ads via an in-app purchases and you can
also buy credits to use for voice or video calling. Here are two brief reviews
I found:

Review 1: TextPlus
The textPlus app (Free, with in-app purchases) offers free unlimited texting on
your iPhone or iPod touch by setting up your own “phone number” that you can
give to your friends and family.
This ad-supported app (remove them with in-app purchases) offers group
messaging, so you can send one message to multiple people. TextPlus also uses
push notifications so you won’t miss a message.
The app also supports voice phone calls for relatively low prices and free
calls to other textPlus users.
Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

Review 2: TextFree Unlimited
Like the textPlus app, TextFree Unlimited (Free, with in-app purchases) assigns
you a phone number that you can share with others. It requires a Wi-Fi
connection, but once connected, you can send unlimited messages from your iPod
touch or iPhone to cell phones on any U.S. carrier.
You can also receive voice calls for free and either earn or buy minutes to
place outgoing calls.
TextFree Unlimited also supports push notifications, so you’ll receive your
texts even if the app isn’t open.
Like most free texting apps, TextFree Unlimited contains ads, though in-app
purchases can be used to remove them.
Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

Take care,
Sieghard

You can not send an SMS from the IPod because there is no cellular capability.
So the only way you can text her is to use one of the apps like Allo or What's
up and you must both have the app on your device.

Hi.
I only have iMessage and the Contacts apps that I think I can message from. I'm
using an iPodTouch, so am not sure I can get Whatsapp. Can someone tell me
whether I'm on the right track with my thoughts?

Also, where would I go to set the Send as SMS option?

Thanks,
Dani
