As Katja pointed out, it seemed that the problem was that her router had no internet connection. I have experienced this before where if that happened I would delete a message and next thing it was back. If you are using a protocol like IMAP or Exchange Active Sync where the mail clients syncs to a server this can happen if there is no internet connection.
