If you have a gift card balance it should be used first. Only exception as far as I know is when you send somebody an electronic gift card or gift an app, these are always charged to your credit card on file, but I am pretty sure all other purchases including subscriptions are first deducted from any balance you have. If you have only $5 gift card balance left and a $10 purchase comes up it will use the remaining $5 of your balance and bill the rest to your card.
I just picked up four $20 gift cards for $80 so they were 20% off at Costco here in Canada. This reduces my $15 Apple Music family subscription to $12 a month. Next time I see cards at 20% off I probably pick up another $100 worth then I have enough for my Apple Music subscription for the entire year plus a bit extra for some apps. Next question: I'm subscribed to TuneIn Radio Premium. My next payment is scheduled for the 15th. When that date comes, will the iTunes gift card balance be used first before my credit card, or would the card be used since I set it as the primary payment method?
