Just to add what Chris said, if you have a lot of items like for example if you use the item chooser on a website with lots of links, you do have also a table index and a search field where you can search for a particular item if you know the name. As you type each letter the selection is reduced to show only matching results.

The item chooser takes the items on the screen and list them in alphabetical order. Just flick through the list and double tap on the one you want. Hope this helps.
