I assume this is a joke, but being a geek myself, I feel obligated to
stand up for geeks everywhere. First, I don't think it's an easy task to
come up with an algorithm that's going to know how to pronounce an
abbreviation correctly in every context. I don't think it's a case of a
geek with delusions of godhood, but rather a smart guy trying to do the
best he or she can do to make as many people as happy as possible while
taking up as few of your iPhone's resources as she can.
Second, I think an option in the iPhone where you can turn off
abbreviation expansion or providing a pronunciation dictionary would be
a good feature allowing people to customize things a bit more to their
liking. I know I've fought for the ability in screen readers to turn off
abbreviation expansion so I can hear exactly what's on the screen with
as little interpretation as possible.

I guess this proves they're neither.

Subject: Cooking with terabytes
Good old Alex has discovered a new cooking term. Did you know that when you're
making short ribs in the slow cooker, you need to add
one and a half terabytes of balsamic vinegar? When, when, will the folks who
make the speech synthesizers stop trying to guess what
abbreviations mean and leave it up to us, the human readers with the smarts, to
figure it out for ourselves?
