Steve, that is just Apple’s way of making it more difficult to send text messages to your girl-friend *smile*.
OK, joking aside, do you share the same Apple Id? If not, did you maybe accidently use your wife’s Apple Id when you set up your phone? Another place to check is under Settings > Messages and see which phone numbers and email addresses are entered there and which is set to be used for outgoing messages.
