Yes, this is still a bit of a problem. You don’t gain that much space. It will only work on thin cases. I suppose if they made it much longer and you had a thin case, it could be less secure in that the microphone would not fit snuggly against the bottom of the case or phone. They would have to make many removable pieces to make sure this worked with cases of different thickness.

It is the part that would be directly against the iDevice when plugged in.
