The first bill it recognizes might take 5 or 10 seconds, but after that I've found it is almost instantaneous. Just either put the phone face down and hold the bill 4 to 6 inches above the phone, or have the bill on the table or flat in one hand and hold the phone 4 to 6 inches above the bill.
