Hi Alan, this trick only works with audio or self-voicing apps, since VO is disabled when the screen is locked. So sadly it's not possible to read an iBook with the screen locked. If Apple ever implements a "read out loud" feature outside of VoiceOver, this would then allow you to do what you want, but given Amazon's battle with the publishers over such a feature, they may not be keen to go there.
