I use the plugin: inkarkat/vim-SearchHighlighting One of its features I really like is '*' does not advance the cursor to the next matching word.
Another plugin I use is: vim-scripts/Add-to-Word-Search This allows easily adding new words to a search with <Leader>** It works great, but it advances the cursor to the next matching word.
