I doubt the Vim community owes you anything.
Anyway, Vim follows standard Unix way: provide reasonably safe
defaults but allow a users go and shoot himself in the leg if he wants
to. You disabled 'backup' and 'writebackup' without realising the
consequences, you got what you wanted.
