AFAIK, emoji should be double width. And unicode.org recommend square aspect ratio. As the evidence, MacVim merged this patch. https://github.com/macvim-dev/macvim/commit/dd3bc8209b200eef75808947a29ebd260c79389a There are a lot of multi-byte users trouble in this issue, and they has been given up.
