I don't know either. For me, I switched because of a number of bugs in
courier imap, and, the lack of support of the product when a bug was
reported. They seem to like to blame it on the other guy. There was
hostility towards vpopmail, not sure why or what the history is there.
But dovecot conversion was fairly painless, and, it does seem faster.
