Perhaps i could modify the source with that patch. Seems I need to

If my memory serves me correctly, one of the older auth patches
incorrectly closes the FD 3 socket.
Which patch are you trying to use ?
FYI - Bill Shupp's complete patch is the easiest to use IMHO, you
can get it at www.shupp.org
