It sounds like a problem with the sender's SMTP server not being able to handle a message where only some of the recipients exist.
Have the original sender do a test where they email a real gmail account, and a completely made up one. Does the same thing happen?
If they're running an Exchange Server, they should see if there are any patches or updates they can install.
