I agree with this as well. A single patch to vpopmail to add "hooks" for adding and deleting users and domains allows for a lot of flexibility.
I've seen requests to automatically send a welcome message to new users. Instead of adding it as a feature to vpopmail, it can be a script that gets called automatically.
Robin's original requirement (and one that others have had) is to have an alternate Maildir directory layout, with symbolic links. Again, this is easily accommodated (and updated) by calling a script/program on user add.
