Some time ago I experienced similar problems with IMAP authentication for some people using Mozilla or Thunderbird clients. After some digging through Courier's config files I found two settings in ${COURIER/CFG/DIR}/imapd which seemed to be related to this issue: MAXDAEMONS and MAXPERIP.
