With the command line client, now I need to write the '-h

localhost|3306|root|<myrootpass>|vpopmail

Try replacing 'localhost' with '127.0.0.1'. I seem to recall reading somewhere that MySQL would use a socket connection (in the file system) instead of a TCP connection when given localhost. Using 127.0.0.1 forces the use of TCP.
