I've posted an updated Makefile.am on SourceForge for the recent 5.3.25 and 5.3.26 releases.
If you've been having problems building those releases (for example, on FreeBSD), then try replacing the stock Makefile.am with this new one. You might need to run "touch Makefile.am; make Makefile" to ensure that it rebuilds the Makefile from Makefile.am.
Thanks to Hani Mouneimne for giving me access to a FreeBSD box so I could troubleshoot the errors.
