Because vpopmail uses a hashing algo after a certain number of users and starts creating 1 character sub directories to store new users in.
So, the info in vpasswd would conflict with those subdomains.
A work around is to create a user with more than 1 character and then create a .qmail-x file which forwards to the more than 1 character email address.

What is the reason we can't have single letter usernames in vpopmail?
