This problem has been explained before. If you're using the authdaemon authentication module, it doesn't properly pass on the env variables needed to open the relay. The relay-users feature *IS* integrated into the library, it's authdaemon that breaks it. The solution is that you can recompile imap without authdaemon (--without-authdaemon) and with only authvchkpw (--with-authvchkpw) and that should fix your problems.
