Since the authentication failure doesn't trigger the syslog message, QPOP
isn't calling vchkpw.

You should :-) Perhaps the README should be clearer about this. Disable QPOP
and run qmail-pop3d, here's a qmail-pop3d startup script from
http://www.inter7.com/vpopmail/FAQ :

env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin" \
tcpserver 0 pop3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup your.host.here \
/home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir &

Ah, it just struck me as a bit odd that the gid was so close to nobody's.
