I'd highly recommend using the daemontools package @ http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html If you really want to have the SysV style init.d script, just use the daemontools option above and "svc start smtpd" from your init.d/rc.smtpd or whichever process is at hand. Read the other boot scripts (particularly the short ones) if you need an outline.
