Host machine: MacBook Pro running MACOS 10.5.7
Guest: Gentoo Linux x86_64 2.6.27-gentoo-r8 (64-bit)

The MacBook Pro has a Core 2 Duo processor (two processor cores).
Before I recently upgraded to version 3.0.2 from version 2.2.4 I was
only able to run a single core because Virtualbox didn't support SMP
operation on Linux guests. Now I am able to run both cores and I am
seeing close to twice the performance.

However, occasionally the VM will lock up and the only way I have been
able to recover is to reboot the VM. Whenever the lock up happens the
VirtualBox process on the host processor jumps up to upwards of 190%
(both cores fully loaded). What I mean by "lock up" is that the guest's
X window interface freezes completely, except for the mouse. So far I
haven't determined if guest kernel is actually locked up or just the X
server. The incidence of the lock up condition is about two to five
times a day.

As a test, for the last two days I have been running with VirtualBox set
to a single processor core. There have been no lock ups. Prior to this
I briefly tried turning off the PAE/NX option with both cores enabled,
but I experienced a lock up with that setting also.

I have the high-resolution timer configured to OFF in my guest kernel
and I have the event timer set to 250ms, as recommended somewhere in the
documentation.

Any ideas what migh be the cause of this? Can anyone suggest any other
things I can try to resolve or work around the problem?

Thanks.
