That's the problem, thanks!  I guess I must have a really old/original
XP Home CD which doesn't support USB 2.0 EHCI.

It was just the USB 2.0 support from VirtualBox that stopped
*anything* working.  With the EHCI controller disabled in VirtualBox
everything works fine.  

I set up the new/pristine XP machine to try and diagnose my problems
with a Garmin Nuvi SatNav.  My 'working' XP guest has problems
installing *any* new USB device now, it seemed to go wrong when it was
upgraded to Service Pack 3, I always get a message about drivers not
being installed "The Data is invalid".
