I had a similar problem which seemed to be related to the network adapter configured for the VM.
In my case, it was an XP VM on an Ubuntu 8.10 host. The VM was originally configured with a PCnet-FAST III adapter. The VM would start and I would begin to see a lot of network activity (blinking of the icon at the bottom of the vbox window) when the window would suddenly close. Based on the log, it appeared I received an address via DHCP (NAT), but noticed some UDP-related errors. The problem stopped when I reconfigured the VM to have an Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop adapter and installed the appropriate drivers in the VM.
