You should use bridged networking. In VM settings go to network settings page, select "Attached To:" "Bridged Network" (for 2.2) and select the host interface you want to bridge to. This will make you VM be in the same network as your host and be accessible like other hosts in your network.

How can I set up a Linux guest so that I can access it via ssh from
other Linux hosts (real) on my network.

I haven't had any success with setting its static address as I can
with a real host.
