About two months ago, I asked about this issue. I also filed a ticket (http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3054) which has never received a response.
The recent announcement (VirtualBox 2.2 Beta 1 released) says that "Host-only networking mode" has been added. Might this be relevant?
