Hi all,

First my setup/situation.

I am running openSuse 11.1 host on my Acer netbook, and I'm using VB 2.1.0
(the full version with USB support).

I have done a full install of XP running VB as root. This is because of a
known problem accessing the USB DVD drive as user in 11.1 which I have not
yet managed to solve.

Everything seems to run fine as root, but I would prefer to run VB as user, if
only to avoid the need to put in the root password everytime. (I take the
computer to several different places each day, and I reboot each time).

I made a clone copy of the .vdi file that root uses successfully, then copied
it into /home/paul/.VirtualBox/other_vdi. I then changed the file
permissions on the .vdi copy to give user rights.

I ran VB as user and created a new machine using the clone copy of the vdi.
The first time I started the machine all seemed fine, except that XP wanted
to search for drivers for the "new hardware" which is the "VBox Harddrive".
I ignored this, but then the next time I started the machine, XP said that
the hardware had been changed, and I had 3 days to re-activate it. Then I
discovered that the internet connection was not working. I went to the XP
control panel, and "Network Connections" showed an empty folder. ( I had
checked before, when I first started the machine) and the connections had
been properly shown.

So something is going very wrong, and I suspect it is connected with the XP
guest not "seeing" the VB harddrive correctly.

Any ideas how I can solve this,

Many thanks

Paul Williamson
