Section 6.5 in the 2.1.0 User Manual says how to
configure things for "Host Interface Networking".
I think they have tried to provide a kernel module
(vboxnetflt?) which sniffs packets and decides
whether or not to pass them through-- to the guest,
to the host, to the real network to which the host
is attached... essentially a software version of an
ethernet switch is inserted between the host and the
real network, and the host and the real network are
connected to that software switch, and any guests
which come up are also connected to the switch.

I get the impression the vboxnetflt... whatever
the netfilter plugin is... has issues when it
comes to things like passing ARP requests/replies
between the real network and the guest. There is a
"Where networking results from 2.1" thread in this
vbox-users list which talks about some issues.
