It is a protocol switch - as per RFC6455. It starts off as an HTTP connection and then switches to WebSocket. Since it is a permanent connection, with objects representing the connection at both ends, the initial expectation is that state can be maintained in that object (you have to implement it, extending a base class Tomcat provides). If you need more, let us know with a use case. I am on the J2EE WebSocket EG and we are looking at this topic at the moment.
