You might actually want to test your hardware, too. Something like
memtest86+ is probably in order, though I've never seen character-loss
like that before.

Maybe you have "smart-quotes" in your XML file and the code page 850 +
Avast! are interfering with each other.

FWIW, I've always had great experiences with Avast!.
