Both are high-performance HTTP servers.

Tomcat can run Java servlets while httpd cannot.
httpd can be used as a proxy out-of-the-box while Tomcat cannot.
httpd is more appropriate for certain solutions (Perl/PHP, CGI, etc.)
than Tomcat.
httpd has more authentication options than Tomcat.

Use one of the proxying modules: mod_jk, mod_proxy_http, mod_proxy_ajp.
