1) Always be precise about the Tomcat version you're using; Tomcat 5.x.y?

2) For new installations, use the latest supported level (7.0.14, as of today).

3) Read the servlet spec.

4) Read the Tomcat doc, especially the bit about first web application:

        http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/index.html
