While it's tough to actually crash Tomcat (that is, cause Tomcat to
shutdown prematurely and/or cause a fatal exception), there are ways to
render a Tomcat instance inert: recently a member of the community
actually encountered a (known) bug in the APR connector that could,
under certain circumstances, make the acceptor thread think that no
request handler threads were available even when all were available.
That's not a crash per se, but the effect is the same: the webapp/s
is/are unreachable.
