Yes, I saw that and am hoping I don't have to go down that path. But, I
think that may be the only way to know for certain what is happening.

Just be aware that Sun is rather explicit about the specific versions of
the compilers and libraries used to build the JVM - it can be a major
hassle to get it all set up right.
