I now see an ASCII-formatted certificate dumped into my wtf.log file (yay!) and I get a ClassCastException in my JSP, which means that the request attribute is definitely not null! I didn't have to play around with mod_jk options to increase header size or anything (yet), but this is all in a development environment as a proof-of-concept.
