Though I don't have anything useful to suggest to help solve your
immediate problem, might I suggest looking into Jasper Reports? It's
100% Java and integrates into Java web applications quite well (just
make sure you have enough memory and limit simultaneous database queries).

I think there's even an Eclipse plug-in.
