I'm pretty sure sebb knows very well JMeter, at least after looking at the subversion history :)
The AJP sampler ist still listed in the user guide inside "18.1.2 HTTP Request" and the class is still existing in trunk. So they might simply have moved it as a sub type of HTTP request sometime in the past.
